When to contact a vet
See your vet if, while cleaning the paws, you find wounds, cuts, a raw pad, something embedded that will not come out or a swollen, hot paw, if the dog limps or licks one paw insistently after the walk, or if the skin between the toes is red and smelly despite being dried well every day.
If you suspect the dog has stepped on or licked a chemical, for instance after crossing a freshly treated area, rinse the paw with plenty of water and call the vet: some garden and cleaning products are toxic if swallowed even in small amounts.
